Forklift Seat Cushion and Seat Belt Replacement
The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration won’t usually perform “surprise” inspections to make sure your drivers are wearing their seat belts. If there is an accident at your business and it’s determined that the operator wasn’t wearing a seat belt — or, even worse, that the forklift didn’t have seat belts in the first place — your business could be liable for both civil and criminal punishments, including fines and even jail time.
A damaged forklift seat may also pose a larger problem if the seat belt doesn’t work. What is the driving force that helps you decide to replace the cushion or the whole seat?
Making that call depends on the type of seat that is on your forklift. If you have a simple seat with no suspension or armrest you may choose to just replace the whole seat instead of spending the time trying to figure out what cushions to order. If you have an OEM suspension seat then the cost of the cushions will run much less than a complete seat.
Why is it important to replace damaged forklift seats? Not only are they uncomfortable and unsuitable for operators, they can also pose a safety hazard if the seat belt is not working properly. A non-functional seat belt can result in an OSHA fine and, more importantly, severe injury or death in the event of a forklift accident or tip-over. Always make sure to inspect the seat belt and seat cushion before each use. Choosing the right seat for the environment you’re operating in will be part of your decision on what to purchase. Options to choose from would be vinyl or cloth, suspension or non-suspension, seat belts or armrest. Over the years if you are in need of a seat just send a picture of it to your local forklift dealer and they will be able to guide you in the right direction.
